Prior to the 2012 Olympics PLACE was appointed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc to support their design proposals in obtaining planning for the White Water Canoe Centre scheme, and to provide Employers Requirements documents for tendering. A new landform had to be designed on what was formerly flat grassland, while not creating an obstacle on the flood plain, so that the highest slalom pool could be 9m above ground level. Also on the site was the facilities building for the major pump system to drive water to the highest point of the course. The £30m scheme was opened on time and, post Olympics,  the centre has become a national asset for canoe slalom training.
