Located in Hammersmith and Fulham’s Crabtree Conservation Area, the redesign for Queen’s Manor Primary School includes the creation of new KS1 and KS2 playgrounds, new SEN and Resource Centre buildings and play zones – all designed to promote co-operation, creativity and confidence in play.

On entering the school grounds, playful line markings represent the flow of pupils through the school as they move between years, directing pupils (and adults) towards the nursery gates, KS1 entrance and KS2 playgrounds. In addition to accommodating an enhanced entrance sequence, the new KS1 area incorporates a range of multifunctional soft and hard landscaped areas, including space for school allotments. The use of low mounds helps frame the entrance space while dividing play areas, such as the woodland play zones.

The school’s former car park has been converted into a dynamic KS2 playground space through the use of both natural play areas and durable play equipment. The playground is complemented by a sound and light stage which facilitates imaginary play. Additionally, the school’s chickens and allotment beds, located in the KS2 playground together with a wildflower meadow, a bug hotel and pond, will offer real-life learning experiences. Running through both playgrounds a central dished channel acts as ‘a central spine’ winding through the play areas, into which surface water runoff will accumulate and flow downhill into rainwater gardens.
