PLACE’s shortlisted entry for the 2012 Landscape Institute Green Infrastructure ideas competition re-imagines the New River in North London as a new linear park which reveals, re-connects and diversifies the historic waterway. As a piece of urban green infrastructure, the New River Park brings new life and activity to the river, while drawing communities together, stimulating social and economic growth and managing water in a sustainable way.

Thames Water estimate that within 25 years London’s demand for fresh water will exceed supply. PLACE’s proposals address key issues set out in the Thames Water 25 year plan: supplying new fresh water by capturing urban run-off and cleaning through phyto-remediation ponds; mitigating stormwater through newly created bio-retention ponds along Petherton Road and the New River Walk; and floating reed booms and emergent islands of native riparian vegetation to absorb nitrates, out-compete invasive species, and reduce algal blooms.
