Wimbledon Championships 2023

Last Thursday we visited the Wimbledon Championship for an unforgettable evening of tennis.  We were very lucky to get seats at the Mixed Doubles Final!   

Congratulations to Lyudmyla Kichenok & Mate Pavić for their victory! Kichenok achieved a remarkable milestone by winning her first major championship, making her the first-ever Ukrainian champion in the history of Wimbledon!


We are so lucky to have this on our doorstep!!

RHS Wisley CPD

The team headed to RHS Wisley recently to explore the South African meadow gardens. We wanted to better understand climate adaptability in terms of species selection and so studied the sun tolerant planting scheme to influence our future projects.   We were also able to visit the RHS Hilltop – The Home of Gardening Science, which features a Wellbeing garden, World Food garden and Wildlife garden.  The aim of the centre is to protect the future of plants, people and the planet.  The building where the centre is housed recently won the RIBA regional Award.

Park Management

PLACE is appointed to provide consultancy advice to both Green Park and Stockley Park. Both business parks are award winning parks with Bio-Diversity accreditation.  During 2023 PLACE has been carrying out inspections and preparing reports for facilities management at both parks in order to maintain and enhance the landscape management operations necessary as both parks evolve from their initial design concepts.

Colchester progressing well

Great to see significant progress at Colchester Northern Gateway this week. The buildings are progressing well with handover to tenants occurring already. Most pleasing to see the landscape works have started in the first phase and we look forward to more emerging over the course of the summer!

St Olav’s Public Consultation

St Olav’s scheme went out to public consultation on 9th February and 11th February 2023 with PLACE in attendance as landscape architects to answer any questions relating to the design.

 The development consists of 2 high quality buildings which will incorporate biodiverse roofs that will help conserve energy and provide a natural habitat that encourage plants and small wildlife.  A large >400m2 roof terrace will provide elevated amenity with extensive views towards the city. Whilst on the ground plane the reconfiguration of the streetscape will provide enhanced cycle and pedestrian linkages in the local neighbourhood.

ISO Audits

Every year our company has an audit carried out by QMS to ensure that we meet our ISO quality and environmental objectives.

ISO9001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system which demonstrates the ability to provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements. ISO 14001 is an international standard that sets out the requirements for an environmental management system. It helps organizations improve their environmental performance through more efficient use of resources and reduction of waste.

We are pleased to announce that we have passed both ISO9001:2015 and ISO14001:2015.

Stockley Park Landscape Management

PLACE Design and Planning have been appointed by MAPP to provide consultancy advice in relation to the landscape management of the 88 acre Stockley Park.   The park has received numerous awards over the years and the aim is to ensure the park adapts to changing climatic conditions and bio-diversity aspirations.  PLACE have been providing similar services for over 20 years at Green Park , a 195-acre business park in Reading.

Coombe Road Topping Out

The project team for Coombe Road were in attendance at the Topping Out ceremony which took place on Tuesday 22nd November 2022.  Works will soon start on the landscaping with the focus being on the public realm areas, courtyard and roof terraces.  The public realm area will provide a seamless interface with the surrounding areas and will feature a pedestrian/cycle path. There will also be planting along the eastern boundary which will provide privacy to the tenants  The courtyard will feature tree planting with integrated seating which will encourage social interaction and provide a focal point to the area .  The roof terrace will provide a green elevated space for the residents to relax with seating areas and a mix of planting and the green and brown roofs will help enhance biodiversity.

Travelodge Topping out Ceremony at Colchester Northern Gateway

The topping out ceremony for the Travelodge at Colchester Northern Gateway took place on Wednesday 16th November 2022. Representatives from Travelodge, Turnstone Estates, the main contractor HG Construction, Colchester Amphora Trading, Colchester Borough Council and Canada Life were all in attendance.   The hotel is due to finish and open in July 2023.  This will be a 90 bedroom hotel based on the company’s new budget luxe premium look and feel design.  The hotel will be located next to the other amenities which includes a 12-screen cinema, 20-lane bowling alley, climbing centre, indoor golf and a wide range of great-quality restaurants.

Power Road Studios

This week we attended Power Road Studios as part of our role as Technical advisor to the client team on Studio 5. Works are progressing well. We were also able to review our previous scheme Studio 1 and Studio 2 which were completed in 2020.

400 Longwater Avenue shortlisted for BCO National Award

The BCO National Award ceremony took place on Tuesday 4th October at  the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London.  400 Longwater Avenue at Green Park having won the Commercial Workplace Regional Award earlier in the year was  then shortlisted for the National Awards. We were not successful this time, maybe next time.  Congratulations to all the winners!

Green Park Surveys

As part of our role as landscape management consultants for Green park, PLACE visited the park for 3 days in September to carry out the annual Water, Tree and Ditch surveys.  The weather was good to us and we only had a few showers!

19 Worple Road - Planning permission granted!

 

Last week Merton council granted planning permission for the redevelopment of 19 Worple Road, Wimbledon.   The scheme will replace the 1960’s office building with a new 8 storey building which will  contain Grade A office space and a retail unit.  PLACE were involved in the landscape strategy, streetscape design and the design of the multiple roof terraces on second, sixth and seventh floor which will provide spill-out space for the tenants.

Buckingham Gateway submitted for planning

PLACE were commissioned to prepare a landscape strategy for mixed use residential development in Slough town centre consisting of ground level communal courtyard, streetscape design and multiple roof terraces. Playable landscapes feature in all spaces with the opportunity for residents to grow their own fruit and veg in the raised beds on the roof terraces.

Camden Goods Yard - Community group meeting

As part of community engagement exercises, PLACE presented outline proposals for an area that falls within the main masterplan known as Interchange Yard. This area will house a community facility as well as food growing areas, flexible open space and a play space; and the feedback from the session will inform the future use of this community space.

400 Longwater Avenue Win!

Golden Award Winner at Vande Moortel Clay Paver Awards!!

PLACE have won the Vande Moortel Clay Pavers Golden Public Space Award for the Hobson’s Square project in Cambridge.    The dinner and award ceremony took place on 29th April 2022 in Oudenaarde, Belgium. 220 Queenstown Road granted planning

Planning approval was granted for two locally listed late-Victorian buildings in Battersea to be transformed into 31,000 sq ft of commercial space.

PLACE were commissioned to provide a multileveled landscape strategy on this project to include the entrance, ground floor and all upper floors of the building which will include a biodiverse roof with wildflowers, herbs, sedums and flowering perennials.

Works have started on Colchester Northern Gateway

On 16 March a special ground-breaking ceremony took place at Colchester Northern Gateway.  Representatives from HG Construction, Colchester Amphora Trading, Colchester Borough Council, Turnstone Estates and Canada Life were all in attendance to celebrate the start of work at the £65 million leisure park development.  Construction is due to be completed by the autumn of 2023.  

The 200,000 sq ft leisure development is located within Colchester’s Northern Gateway, south of junction 28 of the A12.  The occupiers committed to the scheme include Cineworld, Travelodge, Hollywood Bowl, Puttstars, Jump Street, Kervan Kitchen, Greggs, Wendy’s and Fastned.

52-73 Wilton Road receives planning at Appeal stage

In November 2020 Westminster City Council rejected the proposals for this site. This has now been overturned following a four-day appeal in October 2021. For more information please click here.

PLACE were commissioned to prepare a landscape strategy for a proposed six floor mixed use development close to Victoria station.  The development includes new residential units and high quality flexible commercial spaces; including offices, retail, restaurants and cafes at ground floor; enhanced public realm with hard and soft landscaping (including a new avenue of trees); improving access and servicing. Construction work is expected to start towards the end of 2022.

Planning was granted immediately prior to Christmas, to The Royal Ballet school at White Lodge, Richmond Park.  Works can now commence to extend the boarding accommodation via conversion and extensions of the loft space above Blocks A, B and C on the southern side of the grounds.  As part of the works, 30 no. trees will also be provided to Queen’s Ride located immediately to the west of the site.

Thames Road building works have started

Building works have started on the development at Thames Road, Barking.  The existing buildings have been demolished and will be replaced by a residential development of 156 units with light industry and a café at ground level. 

PLACE were commissioned by McLaren Construction Ltd to provide the landscape strategy.  The landscape scheme will include large podium spaces for residents, play spaces on lower level roof terraces and quieter recreational provision on the lower terraces. Inspiration was taken from the site’s proximity to the River Thames and the estuary setting, as well as acknowledging its historic industrial background, complementing the materials and structural architectural forms proposed.

Lidl Head Office – under construction

External works on site are now well underway, with the landscape really beginning to take shape.

Works, to date, have included hard and soft works at the main entrance and access roads; greening of perimeters; and larger earthworks to the staff area adjacent to the Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) which now includes a rather large hole in the ground (aka. The Pond)…

With the exception of a few finishing touches, it is hoped all of the external works will be complete mid-late January.

Berol Yard wins award!

The Gessner, Berol Yard in Tottenham has won the Excellent Homes (Large Scale) Award at the Haringey Design Awards 2021.  PLACE were appointed by Formation Design & Build to provide landscape design services for the raingarden courtyard and streetscape spaces plus three roof terraces at Level 8, 12 and 13.

Green Park has won an award!! 

Green Park has won the Biodiversity Legacy Award as part of the BIG Biodiversity Challenge 2021. Green Park has a biodiversity management plan in place which includes trees, shrub beds, Longwater lake, woodland areas, wildflower grasslands, log piles, hedgehog brash piles and bird/bat boxes.  PLACE provide Landscape Management guidance on the park to assist with the development of these ecosystems.

Camden Goods Yard, North London

PLACE have been commissioned by St George West London Ltd to provide the technical landscape design for the regeneration of Camden Goods Yard in North London.  This is a residential mixed-use scheme comprising 573 new homes across a mix of seven buildings. These will include residents’ facilities, commercial and retail spaces including a new Morrisons supermarket, marketing suite, cafés, restaurants, workshops, and offices.  The landscape includes open plaza spaces with integrated play areas, alfresco spill-out spaces for outdoor seating, tree-lined streets, a dedicated play space, incidental street play, outdoor gym facilities, community growing gardens, and cycle hire stands.

Blossom Court at St Ann’s Hospital has won an award!! 

PLACE were commissioned by Vinci Construction to provide the landscape design services for St Ann’s Hospital in Haringey.  The development has now won Building Project of the Year at the Constructing Excellence SECBE Awards.  The development comprises four wards spread over two storeys of the building with 74 ensuite bedroom.  The building features three courtyards, two roof terraces, arrival space to the front, refurbishment works to existing hospital areas and a small external gym space.

Wheatstone House

Works have completed at Wheatstone House, Chiswick. PLACE were appointed by Quadrant Construction to produce the landscape design for the 9 storey mixed-use development located between Chiswick High Road and Kew Bridge.  The scheme includes public realm on the ground floor with retail units and 95 residential units.  Private amenity spaces for the residents are located on the first floor (podium) level.  There is also play provision for children.  Basement parking is also provided for 60 vehicles.  The building forms a horseshoe in shape with the commercial space occupying the central area at ground floor, with a landscaped podium above providing amenity space for residents.

Newtown Phase 3, Limerick, Ireland

PLACE have prepared a Landscape Strategy for a proposed new residential development and associated infrastructure in Newtown, Limerick, in Ireland. The proposed wider masterplan consists of 378 units with associated open space, footpaths, cycle paths and vehicular infrastructure across a 9.21ha site.

 Whilst Phase 3 includes residential buildings, it focusses on connecting the open amenity spaces through green corridors, and to the Castletroy Urban Greenway network along the eastern boundary.

LIDL progress

Works are progressing well at the new LIDL UK headquarters at Tolworth with the landscaping starting to take shape in the coming months.  The six-storey office building will accommodate 750 staff, with car parking for 445 cars, staff amenity areas, high quality entrance, natural swale, “green corridor” leading through a multi-storey car park and perimeter trees. Internal soft landscape to the atrium and reception areas. The site sits adjacent within Metropolitan Open Land (MOL).

The Gantry

Works are progressing well towards practical completion of phase 2 later in summer 2021. The landscaping to various roof terraces, podium gardens and green roofs is in its final stages.  The views span the Olympic Park and beyond to London’s dramatic skyline.  The site includes an 18 storey Curio by Hilton hotel with 285 guest rooms as well as a 17 storey Adagio Aparthotel.

400 & 450 Longwater in Green Park, Reading have achieved practical completion. The site provides two, five storey office buildings within a 298,000 sq ft development. The site offers views over the Foundry brook and surrounding countryside and is also framed by willow-lined swale and mature tree planting.  The buildings have been designed to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating and International WELL Building Institute Platinum certification.

Blossom Court at St Ann’s Hospital featured in Architect’s Journal

St Ann’s hospital in Haringey, north London completed in August 2020. PLACE were commissioned by Vinci Construction to provide the landscape design services for three courtyards, two roof terraces, arrival space to the front, refurbishment works to existing hospital areas and a small external gym space. The four wards of the new buildings are spread over two storeys and are arranged around two private courtyards.  The generous second floor courtyard features a deep overhang to provide shade and shelter.  On the first floor it creates a terrace with visual connectivity to the larger courtyard beneath.   The emphasis is on physical wellbeing by promoting a healthy lifestyle with good access to daylight, exercise and views of nature.

Colchester Northern Gateway - Planning Permission granted

Colchester Northern Gateway was granted planning permission. The scheme comprises of a 12 screen cinema, numerous restaurant units, two drive-thru units, a 90 bed hotel, two indoor active leisure units and multi-storey car parking. The exciting public realm includes large plaza and meeting spaces, restaurant spill out spaces, water bodies, and opportunities for impromptu play and social gatherings. As the building nears completion externally works are progressing well on the landscaping to various roof terraces, podium gardens and the Skybar Terrace on the 18th Floor. The hotel will open summer 2021.

Fish Island Village has won three awards!

Fish Island Village won three awards at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards 2020. These were for Winner – Overall Grand Prix Award, Winner – Best Large Development and Highly Commended – Best Regeneration Project. Fish Island Village is a 580 unit canal-side community on the edge of Hackney Wick, located between Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Victoria Park. PLACE have been involved in all three phases working for Peabody Housing Trust/ The Trampery social enterprise and Hill Residential on this development. The scheme includes all the public realm spaces, courtyards, play areas and a long canal frontage. There are also multiple roof terraces, offering higher level amenity areas for residents, some with views towards the Olympic Park.

Development plans for a co-location site, with 156 proposed residential units, light industry, and a café at ground floor have been submitted. The residential blocks vary in height and offer large podium spaces for residents.

We have taken inspiration from the site’s proximity to the River Thames and the estuary setting, as well as acknowledging its historic industrial background, complementing the materials and structural architectural forms proposed. The built form of the development strongly connects the building to its industrial roots, and the landscape complements this strong form, but softens it to complement its new residential tenancy.

Fisherman’s Dock - Planning Submission

Fisherman’s Dock, Poole has been submitted for planning.  The proposal is for the construction of three residential blocks housing 228 apartments, a 120 bedroom boutique hotel, complete with rooftop restaurant and bar and commercial space.  Public routes have been designed to meander through the site, providing gateways to the waterfront.  There will also be 264 underground parking space as well as secure cycle spaces for every residential unit.

Castlewood building works have started

We are delighted to announce works for the proposed nine storey mixed use development next to Centre Point has begun.

Existing office building is currently being demolished and will be replaced by a new mixed used development providing space for commercial office spaces above and retail units on the ground floor.

PLACE were commissioned by RLAM to prepare landscape design proposals, working together with apt architect and CBRE. Part of the landscape scheme will include creation of roof terraces and public realm improvement.

Permission granted!

We are delighted to announce the proposed commercial development 1-4 Francis Grove, in Wimbledon, achieved planning permission recently!

The development consists primarily of mixed tenancy office and meeting room spaces, roof terraces, and provides public realm improvements enhancing the pedestrian environments and greening the streetscape.

PLACE were commissioned by Kingston Estates to prepare the Landscape Strategy, to assist the Design and Access Statement provided by MATT Architecture.

St George’s Activity Centre shortlisted for RIBA Award

We are delighted to announce that St George’s College Activity Centre in Weybridge has been shortlisted for the RIBA South East Awards 2020. PLACE were commissioned to provide the landscape design,, Conservation and Landscape management plan and LVIA assessment for the Activity Centre which is located in a Green Belt and is a Grade II Listed Park incorporating a 8m level change across site. 400 & 450 Longwater Avenue in Reading has officially topped out!

A tour of the emerging building, including a presentation of the concept and design of the 300,000 sq.ft office development, was given by Apt Architects. Visitors included Mapletree’s Head of UK Paul Bailey and Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Minister for COP 26, The Rt Hon Alok Sharma MP. The ceremonial topping out was celebrated by planting a tree on the roof of the building. The two buildings, have been designed to a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and Well Building Standard® ‘Gold Certification’ and are due to be completed in 2020.

Green Park Water and Reed Management

As landscape management consultants for the park, PLACE were at the beautiful (and slightly flooded) Green Park Business Park this month to discuss water and reed management across the park.

In recent years the reeds and rushes have been happily multiplying, and we are implementing a new 5-year strategy to manage them!

Reed cutting will prevent the build-up of nutrients and dead plant material, maintains a healthy mix of young and old reeds; and benefits reed-bed birds and invertebrate diversity as it regulates their habitat.

St George’s Activity Centre reaches completion

St George’s Activity Centre in Weybridge has been officially completed. PLACE were commissioned to provide landscape proposals to create a vibrant sense of place for the new centre which includes a sports hall, dance studios and a series of flexible spaces. The building also features a green roof with an undulating roof and exposed timber structure.

Cambridge CPD

Cambridge was the location of our CPD day out. This enabled the team to explore the projects in which PLACE had a pivotal role in designing the landscapes, they included Hobson’s Square, Clay Farm North and Seven Acres. Both Clay Farm and Seven Acres feature a central green area as a focal space for the community. Hobson’s Square features a 25-tonne timber sculpture known as the “Bronze House” which refers to the Bronze Age archaeology found on the site. All projects are now complete and it was great to see the finished projects in use.

St Ann’s Hospital in Tottenham is beginning to take shape. Construction started at the beginning of the year and is due to complete in the summer of 2020. The building will accommodate four mental health wards over two storeys.

Newtown planning application submitted

PLACE was commissioned by Formation Design & Build Ltd to prepare a Landscape Strategy for a proposed new residential development and associated infrastructure in Newtown, Limerick, Ireland.

The proposed development consists of 378 units with associated open space, footpaths, cycle paths and vehicular infrastructure across a 9.21ha site.

Barnwell Gate submitted for planning

Situated in Cambridge, this proposed student accommodation development has now been submitted for planning consent. The landscape design consisted of streetscape design along a key arterial road into the city and the design of an axial internal courtyard space between two residential blocks. The design of the internal courtyard balanced the requirements of the space with a large shared active space focusing on movement and a more passive space creating opportunities for recreation, study and socialising. A small 'garden' space was also created in the 'suntrap' at the end of the courtyard.

Goldsmiths Arms submitted for planning

PLACE provided the landscape design for the proposed residential development of the former Goldsmiths Arms public house site in Acton. The design comprised of a ‘spill-out’ space for commercial units, private gardens and a communal garden for residents featuring a smaller quiet recreational space and a larger active play space. Edible plant species made up of traditional pub tastes were included throughout the scheme to reflect the site’s former use. The scheme has now been submitted for planning consent.

Royal Ballet School wins BALI Award

The Royal Ballet School, housed in White Lodge in Richmond Park was the principal award winner of the BALI National Landscape Award for Hard Landscaping (Non-domestic). PLACE provided landscape proposals for the restoration of the main eastern entrance area of White Lodge and was on board from concept through to completion.

Reynard Mills reaches completion

Reynard Mills in Brentford has been officially completed. PLACE were first appointed on the 195 unit residential project in 2013 to develop a landscape scheme to support a planning application, and continued to work on the project through to its construction. The landscape proposals included hard and soft treatment of the streetscape, including the creation of three key Home Zone areas, a large podium, courtyard gardens and door step play areas. Street trees were chosen to help identify the different character areas of the site.

Revive Manor Park! Phase 1

Manor Park near New Malden is a small local community park in a suburban backwater which has a lot of untapped potential. The park is in the closing days of a crowdfunder to fund production of a masterplan for it’s redevelopment, to consult those proposals with the local community and to make a start towards the improvements. They've nearly reached their target but now is the time for that big push and hopefully for them to smash it.

PLACE provided a new landscape design for the redeveloped roof terrace at Queen Street Place. Located on the banks of the Thames in the City of London, it is the perfect setting to enjoy views of the city in the winter evening light.

400 Longwater Avenue gets the go-ahead

Construction is due to begin in February 2019 of 228,000 sq ft of office space at 400 Longwater Avenue, Green Park, Reading. Framed by willow-lined swales and the park’s mature tree planting the two new office blocks provide a complementary addition to the business park.

PLACE Design + Planning promotes new Senior Landscape Architect

Ruohan Momo Sun has been promoted to Senior Landscape Architect after recently obtaining Chartered status from the Landscape Institute.

Ruohan obtained her first degree in landscape architecture at university in Shanghai before gaining her MA at the University of Sheffield. She initially worked for the Architectural Design and Research Institute of HIT in China on residential projects and since joining PLACE in 2013 has added to her portfolio by designing landscapes in the UK for commercial developments, large scale residential parks and business parks.

TfL deal to provide new homes and improved public realm

The masterplan created by PLACE has been selected by TfL to develop a 4.7acre site around Northwood Station. The work was completed for Triangle London Developments (TLD), a consortium between Notting Hill and U+I. The site has the potential to provide more than 150 new homes and will deliver step-free access to the tube station, new public space alongside retail and commercial areas and an improved bus interchange. Northwood Station is located on the Metropolitan line in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Subject to contracts, public consultation and engagement on proposals will be carried out later this year, ahead of submitting a planning application.

Fulham’s Queen’s Manor Primary school is completed

The redesign for Queen’s Manor Primary School is now complete; it includes the creation of new KS1 and KS2 playgrounds, new SEN and Resource Centre buildings and associated play zones. Upon entering the school grounds, playful line markings meander through the site leading children through to all three playgrounds. The design features rills leading to rainwater gardens, willow arches as well as a chicken house, allotment beds, wildflower meadows, a bug hotel and pond. The new design is set to develop curiosity, confidence and creativity

Rydens Enterprise School nears completion

Rydens Enterprise School in Walton-on-Thames is due to complete this month. The new £32million secondary school set over 16,000 square metres will be able to accommodate over 1600 pupils, while the surrounding landscape will feature over a 100 trees, undulating mounds, courtyards, playing fields and multi-use games areas (MUGAs).

Clay Farm North under construction

The construction of this 5.3 ha site has been progressing over the last couple years, with many buildings and complementary landscapes now complete. Half of the public space is now open and features a large English Oak, an avenue of Maple trees, as well as a sloped terrain framed by stone seating.

Painshill Park CPD

This winter a company-wide CPD day was held at Painshill Park enabling PLACE designers to explore the landscape garden created by the Hon Charles Hamilton in the eighteenth century. Restored in the 1980s, the park is home to an array of historic features, including pleasure gardens, follies and a crystal grotto. The park has a number of important specimens in the UK, including a Great Cedar (thought to be the largest in Europe), as well as fine examples of Cork, Oak, Yew and Beech trees.
